![]() Not all of the band's music deals heavy subject matter, as some of the happy-go-lucky rock is just that. With an uplifting spirit as infectious as the twang-infused music, up-tempo rocker "Better Than" features the band at their best providing booty-shaking roots rock in support of a catchy hook with a great message, "Life's not about what's better than". The album does a fine job of alternating between feel-good rockers like the ear-melting finger-picked jam "Funky Tonight", fiery protest songs like the jazz-blues smash-up "Gov Did Nothin'" (asking, "Do you really think that the Gov would do nothing if all those people were white?"), and mellow reggae infused ballads like the sandy bottom diversion "Groovin' Slowly". Whether their incredible musical prowess or the weighty lyrical content, The John Butler Trio constantly give you something to think about making sure listeners are either shaking their ass or sinking into deep thought, sometimes evoking both at once. ![]()
